What is Face Fit Testing?

Face Fit Testing ensures that Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) will protect the wearer. Tight fitting respirators and face masks rely on a good seal with the wearer's face.

A Face Fit Test should be carried out when a worker uses a respirator or reusable half mask. Performing a pre-use seal or fit check which should be repeated every time the RPE is put on.

Our team can provide on-site training for your staff to ensure they are all aware of the correct procedures and checks that should be carried out for the RPE they are wearing.

Facial hair is one of the main reasons why the seal of a face mask would be insufficient. It is therefore not advisable to conduct a test on a person with facial hair as this will likely lead to a failure of the test. Disposable masks can also be difficult to consistently create a seal so it is advised that half face masks are a better option.

Minimise the Risk of Transmission

To help minimise the risk of transmitting COVID-19 during our training and for fellow face fit testers it is advised to follow the following guidelines:

  • Ensure social distancing guidelines are followed
  • Those being fitted should keep their respirators on, as much as possible
  • Everyone should wash their hands before starting
  • Those who are being tested with non-disposable masks should clean the mask themselves before and immediately after the test using a suitable disinfectant
  • Test masks should not be used by more than one individual and adequately disinfected once finished
  • Fit testers should wear disposable gloves when cleaning masks
  • Ensure that disposable masks and gloves are disposed of correctly in a waste bin
